Charfield School

Science at Charfield

We have developed our science curriculum to support all our children to achieve the core aims of our CSET Primary Concept Curriculum, and to prepare them to leave Charfield Primary with the confidence, ability and desire to make the world a better place.

A high-quality Science curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in the subject. Opportunities to complete practical activities working alongside their peers in the classroom, also helps them to build character and help to embed our school values: Collaboration, Courage, Enthusiasm, Resilience, Responsibility and Respect.

Our Science Intent

We have designed our Science curriculum so that our children:

  • Receive high quality science education with the foundations they need to recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life.
  • Become enquiry-based learners collaborating through researching, investigating and evaluating experiences.
  • Will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes.
  • Will have opportunities for the critical evaluation of evidence and rational explanation of scientific phenomena as well as an opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data.
  • Appreciate the biodiversity in the world around us and that people of different ethnic origins, class and gender have made significant contributions to science and our natural world.
  • Understand how scientific enquiry and development has changed people’s lives.
  • Understand and learn to explain how society has changed through technological advances in communication, transport and medicine.
  • See how exploration, curiosity and inquiry drives how we understand things better scientifically and how advances in Science changes lives through developments in communication, medicine or transport.
  • Develop a sense of curiosity and exploration for scientific learning and discovery
  • Increase their knowledge and understanding of our world
  • Recognise the importance of Science in all aspects of their daily lives
  • Develop the skills needed to find answers to their own questions using an appropriate process of enquiry
  • Extend their scientific knowledge beyond the classroom

Our Science Implementation

 Our Science curriculum is taught:

  • Through the development of working scientifically skills: questioning, predicting, investigating, observing & measuring, recording, interpreting & explaining and evaluating.
  • By referencing prior learning at the start of each new concept and then practical activities, investigations and experiments allow children to build on their existing knowledge and practise these skills to work towards gaining a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.
  • Covering the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and build upon learning from prior year groups to ensure progression is achieved
  • So that new vocabulary is accessed through a combination of direct teaching and investigation so that our children become enquiry-based learners
  • Through the teachers using age-appropriate techniques to inspire all of our children to develop their knowledge and understanding through a combination of open-ended enquiries.
  • So that adaptations and, where appropriate, differentiation can be facilitated by teachers to ensure that each pupil can access the Science curriculum

Our Science Impact

The impact of the Science curriculum at Charfield Primary School can be see through:

  • Our children retaining knowledge that gives them the foundations for understanding the world.
  • Our children are able to question ideas, reflect upon knowledge and gain resilience when outcomes challenge their ideas
  • Our children work collaboratively to investigate and experiment, generating their own ideas for investigation where appropriate
  • Our children are able to articulate their knowledge with confidence and to suggest improvements to their own work
