PE and sport at Charfield
Our PE Intent
At Charfield, Physical Education (PE) is an integral part of our curriculum which aims to engage and motivate all pupils, in a supportive and challenging way. We aspire to provide every child with access to a wide variety of sports, with further opportunity to participate in competitive and non-competitive sporting experiences. PE at our school aims to support children’s health and fitness, while enabling them to develop their own physical confidence. We recognise the positive impact of physical activity on mental health, productivity and motivation which is why we prioritise high-quality teaching and learning opportunities in PE.
Our curriculum intention is to enable all children to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of physical education; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times to achieve their potential. Each lesson aims to embed our school values of: Responsibility, Respect, Resilience, Collaboration, Enthusiasm and Courage. With this mind, we hope to develop a culture at Charfield where children value and appreciate the importance of physical education.
Our PE Implementation
Each child receives two lessons of PE each week, which are carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities are covered. These sessions are either run by our class teachers or a specialised sports coach. Our drive is to support children with their physical literacy, and for children to think, move, feel and connect in PE lessons.
For children in KS2, one of these lessons is a weekly Gymrun lesson which focuses on physical literacy, and for children to think, move, feel and connect in PE lessons. Gymrun really focuses on the ‘move’ component to support children’s fitness/physical development, physical/mental health/wellbeing, posture, alertness and academic learning. Gymrun builds fitness, fitness understanding and resilience in every child. When children become fitter and more physically competent, they build the confidence and motivation to relate/engage more positively/sustainably within physical activities.

Children in Year 2 and Year 4 are provided with swimming lessons, where they are taught by a qualified swimming instructor to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m using a range of strokes. By the end of Key Stage 2, any children who are still unable to swim 25m will have the opportunity for further swimming lessons across a 2-week block.
We use and adapt a Scheme of Learning from Get Set 4 PE to ensure planning, content and delivery is age appropriate. Lessons are carefully sequenced, with clear opportunities for extra challenge so that learning is differentiated for all abilities. Our PE Progression Map ensures that the PE requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met from EYFS to Year 6 and that there is clear progression across knowledge and skills.
At Charfield, we emphasise the importance of inclusion for all children regardless of sporting ability. Therefore, we aim to provide a wide range of sporting opportunities outside of competitive sports including: residential OAA experience for Year 6 pupils; Olympic athlete visits; extra-curricular clubs; lunchtime team games coordinated by a dedicated sports coach; and following key national/international sporting events as a whole school.
Our PE Impact
All children receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum regardless of year group or ability. Every child will access all of the key areas of the subject on offer at our school. PE planning has clear progression of skills and knowledge that make up part of our curriculum offer so that all children access it at an age-appropriate level. As well as our regular PE lessons, our sports teams regularly participate in inter-school competitions throughout the school year.
In EYFS, children begin to improve their fundamental movement skills and teachers begin to consider the development of agility, balance and coordination for each child.
Pupils in KS1 are given ample opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills and extend their agility, balance and coordination. They engage in competitive and co-operate physical activities through games, dance and gymnastics.
Pupils in KS2 continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching. These skills are incorporated into competitive games, performances using movement patterns and evaluations of their own and others’ work. Pupils communicate and collaborate with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities. There are many opportunities across the year for children to take part in inter and intra-school competitions where their successes in sports are celebrated.
By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in our programme of study. At Charfield, we use formative assessments to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers’ planning. Each part of the PE curriculum is reviewed on a termly basis by the subject leaders.

Achievement
School Football Team
Charfield participated in the Y5/6 Wotton-under-Edge Primary League. After a 9-2 defeat in their first game of the season, the team went on to win 5 and drew 2 of next 7 games which ultimately finished with Charfield being crowned League Champions. It was a real example of our values which we hold dear to our school life and demonstrated immense courage and resilience to fight on after such a difficult setback.
The team worked hard every training session and every match to go from a group of individuals to a fantastic team. The attitude and behaviour of pupils was exemplary, and Mr Adkins couldn't be prouder of them!

Key Indicators - examples of initiatives
Indicator 1 - engagement of all pupils in physical activity
In addition to PE lessons, we run a number of initiatives to encourage all of our children to be engaged in regular physical activity.
Sports Leaders
Our Sports Leaders have a broad range of roles but one of the most important is supporting active play times. Our leaders organise activities and events to ensure the children are active, happy and safe.
Active Travel Initiatives
Each year we run 'Walk To School Week. As a school, pupils, teachers and parents all took part in the initiative.
Indicator 2 - Profile of Sport is raised
Indicator 3 - Increased knowledge, skills and confidence of staff
Staff CPD
Mr Adkins and Miss Luckett are our PE and Sport Leads at school. Throughout the year, they work alongside teachers to plan, support and deliver enriching lessons to enhance our pupil’s knowledge and skills. In addition to this, we offer a range of clubs throughout the year to meet the needs of all our pupils here at Charfield.
We annually purchase the license to use GET SET PE as our school PE scheme of work. Get Set 4 PE is planned so that progression is built into the scheme which ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school.
Indicator 4 - Broader range of sports and activities
Swimming Lessons
We have a number of non-swimmers at Charfield, primarily due a lack of opportunity during the COVID years. For this reason, we have begun to enhance our swimming provision across the school; offering it to three year groups each year in hope that by the time our children leave the school, they can all swim and perform lifesaving techniques.
Indicator 5 - Increased participation in competitive sports
Throughout school we have many sporting teams who are doing well in their respective fields. We have worked very hard to increase the number of sporting clubs on offer by internal and external agencies to support the children's involvement in clubs.
Regular competitions include:
- Tag Rugby
- Girls and Boys Football
- Cross Country
- Athletics
- Swimming
- Panathlon
- Netball
- Hockey
Community Links
We have fantastic links with our sporting community and some of our enhanced provision includes:
Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) at Charfield
Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) is an approach to learning in which direct experience is of paramount importance. This strand of PE embraces activities and experiences that:
- Normally take place outside.
- Frequently have an adventurous, challenging, residential or skill building component.
- Often involve physical activity.
- Always respect the environment.
The term OAA is used because there is an essential need for adventure and challenge in the education of young people. In addition, when children participate in OAA they will be consolidating other areas of PE such as developing motor skills, confidence and competence in the outdoor environment, as well as undertaking both mental and physical challenges. Most importantly, they will also be learning the principles of safety relevant to each activity.
At Charfield, we aim to deliver high quality OAA within our school buildings and grounds and we are increasingly looking to take this out into our local environment. Both indoor and outdoor spaces can be used to introduce and develop orienteering, team building, exploring, bouldering and traversing skills.
Parent Support
How can I support my child’s with P.E?
At home, there are several different ways you can support your child to ensure they have a healthy lifestyle:
Join a local sports club - There are a variety of different sports clubs in and around South Gloucestershire that your child could attend. Some clubs offer different age ranges so that your child carries out the activities with children of a similar age.
Do something together - You can stay active and healthy as a family by undertaking different activities. These do not have to cost any money. Go for a walk around your local area, maybe even take a ball to throw or kick around. Get out on your bikes/scooters and go for a ride together. In addition to this, you can sign up for free events such as ‘Park Run’ (they have both adult and junior runs).
A balanced diet - A Balanced diet is just as important as exercise. Explore different recipes and cook healthy, balanced meals together as a family. You can also make meals fun. Use your artistic skills to turn your plate of food into a piece of art.
