Our Geography Intent

 We have designed our Geography curriculum so that our children:

  • Develops their understanding of the world we live in.
  • Develop curiosity and it helps them to provoke questions and provide answers about the natural and human aspects of the world.
  • Are inspired to be curious and develop a fascination about the world and people within it.
  • Become informed and active future citizens who are inspired by the people and places they study.
  • Gain an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments.
  • Understand how the lives of people in different places around the world are the same and also different.
  • Understand how exploration has contributed to a deeper understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
  • Foster a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.
  • Are provided with a range of opportunities that develop a deeper understanding of the four areas of geography; Locational knowledge, Place knowledge, Human and Physical Geography & Geographical Skills and Fieldwork
  • Have developed and enriched vocabulary to support their geographical knowledge

Our Geography Implementation

 Our Geography curriculum is taught:

  • To develop knowledge, vocabulary and geographical skills including enquiry, problem solving and decision making.
  • Progressively and builds on from each key stage end points.
  • Using the skills of a geographer by being fully immersed in them in all areas of the subject.
  • Utilising the local area to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practise.
  • Using first hand experiences such as school trips and fieldwork which enhance children’s understanding of the world beyond their locality
  • Using a clear progression of skills and knowledge through challenging and appropriately pitched teaching based on the EYFS Framework and National curriculum
  • Through regularly providing opportunities to develop locational knowledge and mapping skills
  • By providing opportunities to experience geography through practical lessons outside of the classroom (such as school grounds and local environment) and in other areas of the curriculum

Our Geography Impact

The impact of the Geography curriculum at Charfield Primary School can be see through:

  • Our children will be confident talking about what they have learnt in geography and use geographical vocabulary accurately
  • Our children will be able to pose geographical questions and draw conclusions about the wider world and people in it
  • Our children have an understanding of how they can help care for the Earth, its people and resources beyond school and into adulthood
