The Governing Body

The governing body has general responsibility for the conduct of the school with view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. School governors have a wide range of responsibilities. They are in charge of planning the school's future direction and can thereby help raise the standards of pupil achievement. Governors are also accountable to parents and their wider community for the performance of the school.

Specific responsibilities include:

working together with the head teacher to set the future direction for the school and decide how the school's budget should be spent.
making decisions collectively on matters such as performance targets, school policies and the school's Development Plan.
reviewing progress against the School Development Plan, the school's budget and objectives set at the start of the year while monitoring the impact that the school's policies have on pupil outcomes.
the full governing body makes its decisions based on the advice of committees that deal with specific issues, such as teaching & learning, curriculum, premises or finances.

There are three main groups:

The Full Governing Body

The Teaching & Learning Committee – responsible for ensuring the highest levels of pupil attainment, provision for special educational needs, gifted & talented children and monitoring standards

The Resources Committee - manages the school budget, financial planning, premises and matters relating to the operation of facilities within the school

There are four types of school governor as follows:

Parent Governor -    elected by parents and carers of children at the school
Staff Governor -     elected by teaching and support staff
Community        -    appointed by the governing body to represent the wider community

LEA Governor - appointed by the Local Authority

It is important to note that school governors lead schools, they don't manage them. The day to day management of the school is the responsibility of the head teacher.
