W.A.L.K. - Walk And Look Kool |
Our W.A.L.K. - Walk And Look Cool - Team is a small committee of parents, teachers and governors who meet every couple of months to review and publicize walking to school and the benefits to the children and parents alike
The committee also, through consultation with parents and carer’s, try to reduce, where possible, the problems and dangers encountered when walking to school
Achievements Up to Now
The W.A.L.K Team have had safety barriers installed outside the school, drop kerbs and tactile paving here also. A new crossing was installed from Long’s View to Few’s Yard to make crossing the main road safer, which was initialised from the Travel Plan.
The new Puffin Crossing which was installed outside of the School was campaigned for and successfully justified through a report produced to go with the current Travel Plan
Footpath widening works were carried out to enable people to walk to school with prams and children not having to step into the road and traffic, again initialised from the School Travel Plan.
Smaller problems have been raised though consultation, like overgrown hedges and bushes, narrowing footpaths which provide physical barriers and safety issues. These too were dealt with and overcome.
Another major achievement which the travel plan played a big part in was helping Charfield Primary School attain the Healthy Schools Award. This is a government backed award which is given to schools that embed in their ethos a healthy happy lifestyle encompassing the whole child’s well being.
Future AspirationsThe W.A.L.K. Team have successfully campaigned to get the Puffin Crossing installed outside of the School and are committed to pushing the Parish and South Gloucestershire Council to agree to support the second crossing point down the road at Few’s Yard / Long’s View.
We also are committed to reducing the car movements around the school, getting children and parents walking and enjoying their trip to school with friends. Reducing car movements will help make the area around the school safer for all.
Want to know more…
The school Travel Plan, and the Report to Assess the Need for Safer Crossing Points, both can be collected from the school office, and we welcome you to read these and get a taste for our work. These documents may seem clinical but are needed to justify what work we need and provide evidence to South Gloucestershire Council, so are worth it.
If you would like to get involved we would love to hear from you, we meet termly if you would like to come or otherwise you’re input is warmly welcomed!
